Department Overview 

Pact exists to help create a world where those who are poor and marginalized exercise their voice, build their own solutions, and take ownership of their future.  The Pact Institute team contributes to realizing this purpose by diversifying revenue streams, generating unrestricted resources, and building recognition for Pact’s work.  Pact Institute is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pact, with fiscal year 2017 revenue at $22 million, generated from various corporate, foundation, and multilateral partners. Pact Institute amplifies Pact’ impact through corporate engagement, thought leadership, incubation of a new signature program, and continued programmatic and financial oversight and quality assurance.

Position Purpose

The Finance Director is a strategic and thought leadership partner who works closely with the Pact Institute Executive Director and the Pact Institute team (Senior Director for Corporate Engagement, Business Development Manager, Senior Director Renewable Energy) to accelerate growth (funding, impact, influence). Working in a matrixed structure to ensure financial oversight and quality assurance to the portfolio of Pact Institute projects, the Finance Director is also a member of Pact’s Chief Financial Officer’s finance team. The Finance Director is dedicated to ensuring efficiency and accuracy in routine financial management and reporting across the Pact Institute portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

Portfolio Financial Management and Reporting:

  • Analyze and present accurate financial reports to Pact Institute and Pact, Inc. senior leadership and board members in a timely manner
  • Clearly communicate monthly and annual statements
  • Collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments
  • Assess financial risk and provide variance analyses for Pact Institute projects
  • Represent Pact Institute in periodic organization-wide business reviews
  • Identify Pact Institute’s requirements in managing organizational cash flow and forecasting
  • Serve as a point of contact with finance, pricing, contracts, accounting, and compliance teams on financial, contractual, and compliance matters related to the Pact Institute portfolio
  • Work with the grants/contract team to implement a robust grants/contracts management and financial management/reporting system, contract billing, and collection schedule
  • Work with relevant teams to ensure that all Pact Institute project and opportunity financial data is accurately recorded in all relevant internal systems

Revenue Diversification, Business Modeling, and Pricing:

  • Provide input and final decisions on Pact Institute cost proposals, in consultation with the business operations team and the Chief Financial Officer
  • Work with finance, program, pricing, new ventures, new business development, and in-country teams to mainstream diversification of funding approaches, tools, and templates, including the creation and articulation of different revenue models and cost structures
  • Support elaboration of Pact’s Renewable Energy and Mines to Markets Signature Programs, and other initiatives through creative and strategic contributions to new and existing partnerships

Corporate Budgeting, Planning, and Audits:

  • Provide leadership on the financial aspects of Pact Institute and cross-organizational strategies and business plans
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process for Pact Institute, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary 
  • Oversee and lead annual overhead budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director

Risk Management and Compliance:

  • Investigate and resolve financial issues for projects within the Pact Institute portfolio
  • Collaborate with the grants/contracts team on new funder and partner due diligence as needed
  • Support the Executive Director in legal and compliance issues


Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field such as business, economics, finance, or accounting
  • 12 years (at least 5 if manager level) of progressively responsible experience developing budgets, financial models, and decision analytics (e.g. financial planning and analysis, corporate finance, investment banking, private equity)
  • Experience working with corporate, foundation multilateral, and bilateral (other than US or UK governments) funders
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills, as well and discernment to guide what questions are asked, how answers are pursued, and how answers are shared
  • A high level of emotional intelligence and discretion
  • Creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit, and deep commitment to the mission of the organization
  • Ability to work with teams across a highly matrixed organization to generate new processes and/or resolve issues
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment across time zones and cultures
  • Excellent presentation skills and an ability to communicate financial information efficiently and effectively
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in having final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area
  • Experience in grants management
  • Technology savvy with experience in financial software tools, particularly Microsoft Office Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA and/or CPA
  • 10+ years of broad financial and operations management experience
  • Experience with reporting and analyzing operations or business results for organizations with $25M+ in annual revenue
  • Experience with both financial and programmatic audits
  • Commitment to training programs that maximize individual and organization goals across the organization including best practices in human resources activities
