HIAS seeks a Community Engagement Director for the Western region to educate, organize and mobilize Jewish individuals and communities in HIAS’ work with refugees and asylum seekers. Through advocacy and direct action opportunities, educational programs, direct service and tzedakah, the Western Region Community Engagement Director will deepen and grow HIAS’ constituency of Jews in the region, focusing on local congregations, individuals, and Jewish organizations. S/he reports to the Senior Director of Community Engagement and works closely with the Directors of Community Engagement Programs, Campaigns, and Education.

Community Engagement is one of four departments within HIAS’ Public Affairs Division. Together, the Public Affairs Division works to present HIAS to the world and create powerful and sustained Jewish support for HIAS and for refugees and asylum seekers. The Community Engagement Director, Western Region, strives to integrate his/her work with that of the whole division, collaborating with colleagues from each of the other Public Affairs teams: Policy & Advocacy; Communications; and Development.

The position will be based in Los Angeles, California. When not traveling on behalf of HIAS, the Community Engagement Director, Western Region, will work from home.

Responsibilities

  • Deepens HIAS’ presence in the Western region, with a focus on the West Coast, as well as HIAS’ growing efforts along the Southern border, cultivating relationships and managing strategic partnerships with key Jewish leaders and organizations in the region.
  • Fosters HIAS’ local visibility and increases the number of Jews knowledgeable about and engaged with HIAS’ work with refugees.
  • Collaborates frequently with synagogues and organizations to coordinate HIAS’ participation in educational events, talks, and programs related to the global refugee crisis and the Jewish response.
  • Strengthens and catalyzes congregational action for refugees through HIAS’ Welcome Campaign and emerging local synagogue coalition.
  • Effectively communicates HIAS’ mission and goals to a wide variety of audiences and serves as the main spokesperson as needed.
  • Creates and delivers an array of programs to local audiences, in collaboration with Community Engagement’s Directors of Program, Education, and Campaigns and the Public Affairs division (especially Development).
  • Supports volunteer opportunities for Jews and others to provide direct services to refugees and asylum seekers, in partnership with the Director of Community Engagement Programs and the Legal Services team.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Campaigns to organize and mobilize local Jews to advocate for policies that protect refugees; mobilizes local Jews to participate in HIAS national campaigns and build online engagement.
  • Identifies and galvanizes local HIAS constituents and leaders; identifies potential donors for follow up by Development team; supports proposal and grant writing for the Development team.
  • In collaboration with Development and Communications, manages external communication with HIAS’ emergent geographical bases in the region; works with Communications team to generate media attention, particularly in the local Jewish press and through social media platforms.

Identifies and capture key metrics while setting ambitious and achievable goals; culls the learnings to advance the work in the Southwest region and to inform HIAS’ work nationally.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree in related field preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience in a related field (e.g. education and programming, community organizing, Jewish engagement, public affairs); extensive background in social justice, human rights, international development/affairs, and/or refugee issues strongly desired.
  • Experience developing and working in successful organizational partnerships preferred; experience working with baby boomers and 20- and 30-somethings a plus.
  • Knowledge of the American Jewish community required; experience in the Jewish community in Los Angeles and/or San Francisco preferred.
  • Ability to work frequent evenings and weekends; ability to travel across the region and to HIAS’ East Coast offices with some frequency.
  • Must be passionate about HIAS’ mission and committed to promoting the vision that social justice is an integral part of American Jewish life.
  • Demonstrated experience with program development and implementation; experience with organizing and/or advocacy strongly preferred.
  • Robust Judaic knowledge and experience leading and facilitating Jewish education modules a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication skills; and ability to work in close partnerships with colleagues and external partners; excellent leadership and management skills; supervision experience strongly preferred.
  • Quick, creative, entrepreneurial, and flexible, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and opportunities; must be a strong strategic thinker who is also very organized and detail-oriented; must possess excellent judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work hard and effectively in a fast-paced environment; ability to work independently and in a team; to initiate and to collaborate; capable of working effectively with remote supervision.
