Two case studies of how to move from insights to action

In 2024, we shared some initial stories from the Weaving Resilience initiative led by the Ford Foundation, South Africa. Humentum partners with Ford in this work to focus on delivering assessments and diagnostics, building skills through training, and providing guidance in financial management, financial sustainability, and good governance.

We deliver this program using the BRIDGE methodology, our proven process for helping organizations and networks navigate complex change. Here are two examples of how to build strength from our most recent work.

Practice what you teach

CivSource Africa’s Program Goal: To move from informal or intuition-based assessments toward structured, data-informed financial governance and organizational resilience.

The mission of CivSource Africa is to refine the practice of philanthropy and the footprint of civil society in Africa. To be a guide and a resource for other CSOs, they themselves need to be as robust as possible.

We are looked up to in the Civil Society sector, so we need to practice what we preach. We need to be internally strong. If you’re going to lead, lead well.

Jackie Asiimwe, CEO, CivSource Africa

Through the Weaving Resilience work, Humentum provided training to senior level management from a variety of organizations on topics around finance and sustainability, which CivSource attended.

“It was great to be part of a community of other leaders who were learning,” said Jackie. “The more I attended the sessions, the more I learned and that triggered us to strengthen our own systems.”

Jackie worked with Shila Nhemi, a Technical Director with Humentum, to request a diagnostic, which led to a series of related work, from training to coaching.

The Humentum team partnered with CivSource to:

  • Provide an independent, evidence-based review of existing financial systems
  • Identify strengths, risks, and areas requiring strengthening or alignment
  • Enhance coherence between executive leadership, finance functions, and board oversight
  • Develop a practical roadmap for strengthening long-term financial sustainability
  • Strengthen strategic financial leadership capacity within the organization

The diagnostic results highlighted opportunities for growth and outlined actionable steps for improvement. The leaders then used data and tools from the report to hold themselves accountable for making progress.

“In fact, I just looked at our improvement plan,” said Jackie. “I check it every quarter, going through it face-to-face with our finance leader. It gives us a good roadmap, internally and to present to the board, for them to keep us accountable for how we’re managing and improving our financing and policies.”

Beyond access to expertise, as part of the Weaving Resilience East Africa Hub, the team at CivSource was able to learn together with colleagues. “Those conversations helped us in terms of compliance, and also with thinking about a path toward an endowment.”

But the gains go further than financial sustainability, and a network of peers.

“Through this process, we’ve been freed to be able to think about what resilience looks like in this moment,” said Jackie. “Last year might have been different; next year will be. What does it mean to increase the chorus of voices thinking about resilience, creating that community, thinking on your feet. It’s become more central to how we think and plan.”

Moving from assumptions to answers

Uzima’s Program Goal: To strengthen the organization’s operational backbone through step-by-step consultancy guidance, get access to practical tools, and be trained on how to build strong systems and diversify funding streams.

Uzima South Africa provides holistic care to the Ezimbuzini community through a model of immediate relief and long-term empowerment. By integrating four pillars from daily nutritional security and early childhood development to essential healthcare access and professional psychosocial support, they ensure that children and vulnerable adults receive the specific, layered resources they need to thrive.

Through Weaving Resilience, Uzima worked with Humentum on different capacities including financial management, sustainability, and standardizing policies delivered through online training, consulting, and curated tools and templates.

“We found the strategic planning, the annual budgeting to be most helpful,” said Gershom Kabaso Jr, the national coordinator. “Financial sustainability (like having an income reserve and so forth), was also very helpful, and lastly, the financial matrix, looking at risks and remedies.”

We’ve all experienced going through a training, getting excited, but then falling back into our old systems because they’re more familiar to us. Did anything change at Uzima after the coaching and training?

“We now do many things differently,” said Gershom.

Before the training and coaching, we worked without guidance. We weren’t always following the compliance processes, for example, with petty cash. We didn’t know. But now we do. We’re more rigorous with policies like countersigning checks and doing monthly reconciliations with the bank.

On a higher level, the work helped us understand the annual budget and how that lines up with the annual plan. Before that, we were just dreaming, just making assumptions. Now we know exactly what we are looking at. If someone asks, ‘What is your operational budget,’ we are able to answer.

With the solid foundation footing, Uzima is already reaching out to new partners to grow its programs.

What would Gershom recommend to other CSOs who want to improve their financial processes and increase their capacity?

“First understand and assess your needs,” said Gershom. “Then commit to achieving the results. Once you do, you can put your organization at another level to attract more funding.”

Strength: From the Inside Out

Words like “strength” and “resilience” are so commonly used that we don’t take time to think about all that goes into them.

“One of the things we continue to learn through our institutional strengthening work is that it’s ultimately an organizational sense-making capability,” said Shila. “Organizations become more resilient when they are able to critically assess their current realities, understand what is shifting in their operating environment, identify what must change, and translate that understanding into deliberate governance, operational, and strategic action.”

That’s one reason Humentum grounds the BRIDGE methodology by starting with analysis and assessment: understanding has to come before meaningful change. And even knowing what to change is only one step towards a more resilient organization.

Knowing what to do is one key aspect. Building the skills, finding the time, and staying on track to make sustainable changes takes any challenge to the next level. It’s like reading about how to cook and then being in charge of an entire professional kitchen. We all need a guide to turn knowledge into results.
