Humentum’s free Financial Sustainability Health Check is a self‑assessment tool designed to help nonprofit organizations understand the overall health of their financial sustainability.
The health check walks organizations through a series of best‑practice statements covering key areas such as leadership, funding mix, financial management, planning, risk, and reserves. It is intended to support honest reflection and discussion, not scoring for compliance or comparison.
By completing the health check, organizations can:
- Assess how closely current practices align with financial sustainability best practices
- Identify priority areas for improvement
- Support internal conversations among leadership, finance staff, and board members
- Establish a baseline to track progress over time
The tool is designed for small and medium‑sized nonprofits, including NGOs, community‑based organizations, and other social good organizations. Humentum recommends completing the health check in a facilitated working session of 5–7 people, with participation from senior leadership, finance staff, and ideally a board representative.

Key features of the health check include:
- Structured statements across core areas of financial sustainability
- A simple scoring approach based on what actually happens in practice
- Guidance for interpreting results and identifying next steps
This is not an audit and not a one‑size‑fits‑all assessment. Results should not be used to rank or compare organizations. The real value lies in the discussions, insights, and action items that emerge during the process.
Organizations may repeat the health check after a year or two to review progress and refine priorities.
