Top tips for a successful co-creation process

Co-creation provides an opportunity to share power and decision making between USAID, implementers, and stakeholders in the design of activities and awards (and beyond!). To make the most of a co-creation opportunity it is important to understand the types of problems and issues that a co-creative process can support.

This short quiz can be used by donors and implementers alike to determine if co-creation is an appropriate approach.

  1. Is the problem/development issue complex with no one cause or solution?
  2. Are multiple stakeholders involved/concerned with no single ‘owner’ of the issue?
  3. Does the issue require active stakeholder engagement?
  4. Is the convener of the process willing to share power and be open to new views?
  5. Will stakeholders dedicate time, and share information and ideas?

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no,’ then an alternate approach should be used.

Benefits of co-creation

Co creation offers several benefits for USAID implementers when it is the right design approach:

  • Provides an inclusive design process across USAID’s program cycle
  • Drives a culture of innovation
  • Facilitates development of new approaches to complex problems
  • Lowers programmatic risk by considering a range of viewpoints
  • Allows USAID to more deliberately involve partners in problem and solution identification
  • Opens access to a broad array of stakeholders to gain new perspectives on an issue
  • Increases local ownership of USAID’s programming

USAID can leverage co-creation throughout its program cycle with a number of different results. The team members involved in a co-creation process will depend on the desired outcomes and the program cycle stage. That said, certain core skills are essential for participants in the co-creation process. When selecting team members to maximize the value of a co-creation opportunity, consider individuals who:

  • Understand your organization’s strengths, capabilities, and relevant programs.
  • Are comfortable challenging USAID and asking critical questions during the design phase.
  • Exhibit a flexible and adaptable mindset, thinking creatively in real-time.
  • Appreciate the competitive landscape while fostering strong relationships.
  • Recognize power dynamics and actively work to balance them.
